Definition of Compensation
For Plan Types A – S
Items that may be included in “Compensation Earnable.” Remuneration earned and receivable in cash (under applicable MOU) to the retiring employee during the final compensation period for working the ordinary time required of other employees in the same grade/class shall be included in “compensation earnable”, including but not limited to the following items of compensation, and others substantially similar to them:
- Base Salary and Wages
- Bilingual Premium Pay
- Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Pay
- Educational Incentive Pay
- Paramedic Pay
- Motorcycle Dispatch Pay
- Emergency Dispatch Pay
- Training Officer Assignment Pay
- Shift Differential Pay
- Automobile Allowance (if paid in cash)
- Payoffs of Vacation and Sick Leave and Holiday to the extent earned (pro-rated on a monthly basis), not taken as time off and permitted to be cashed out (pro-rated on a monthly basis) under the applicable MOU regardless of when actually cashed out
- Overtime required to be worked that is ordinarily worked by others in the same grade/class/rate of pay and is also considered part of your normal tour of duty
- Compensation Time (if not excluded as “true overtime” and to the extent in excess of minimum required reserve)
For PEPRA Plan T
“Pensionable Compensation” is your base pay and regularly recurring pay items for special skills or shifts.
For PEPRA Plan Types U – W
“Pensionable Compensation” is your base pay and regularly recurring pay items for special skills or shifts. It is limited to 120% of the Social Security level adjusted by the Consumer Price Index for all Urban Consumers annually on January 1st following the annual valuation.
